Nebuduck's Glorious Mafia Game

Postby Nebuduck » Thu Jul 24, 2008 8:30 pm UTC

Nebuduck(edited) wrote:OK, I have a new interesting idea for a game. I know there are a LOT of games on right now, so I won't run it until one finished - I imagine it'll be assassins or something.

The game will work as follows:

There will be an undetermined number of the following roles (unless otherwise specified):

Judge (there will only ever be one) - he is known to everyone. He cannot be killed by the mafia, only by lynching. When the judge is lynched, the mafia wins.

Mafia - these are just as in the first game. No special mafia roles. They are simply a group of people who want to get rid of enough townies to lynch the judge. I want this game to run very quickly, so the mafia kill durin the day, not at night, and may also discuss during the day. There is no night.

Townie - these want to keep the judge from being killed.

Cop - can detect what another person is. PM me during the day (since there is no night)

Doctor - can protect another person from a mafia killing. PM me during the day (since there is no night)

Those are basic roles. Some more complex ones:

Anarchist - wins when the judge is lynched. Do not know who each other are. Do not know who the mafia are. The mafia do not kno who they are.

Pacifist - wins if less than 1/2 the players are killed when the game ends.

Man with dodgy heart - the doctor cannot protect him - if the mafia attacks him, even with the doctor's protection, he will be surprised and die of a heart attack.

Necromancer - may talk to one dead person, during day time. They may send/recieve as many PMs as they like during to the dead person. They must tell me who they choose the instant their subject is killed.

Now, roleclaiming is strictly forbidden for ALL roles, and anything amounting to role claiming is also forbidden.

Apart from the judge, I will choose how many of each of these roles there will be. It will be a number between 0 and N-1 (where N is the number of players - N-1 since one must be the judge). Therefore, I can adapt the game according to how many people want to join in.

Edit for clarification: I will never tell you how many of each role there are. You will have to simply guess.

Edit again: once they're lynched, the Anarchist, the Pacifist, the Man with Dodgy Heart and the Necromancer all appear to be normal townies.

OK, that's the basic rules. Everything happens at day - there is no night. Players are:

1. Jakeyizle
2. AKAnotu
3. Overbored
4. Gojoe
5. Megatriorchis
6. Azrael001
7. Rodan
8. Kellsbells
9. une see

Tigion is the co-mod.

New players may join before the end of day 2.

XKCDia has a long history of organised crime issues. Practically every week their magistrate is killed, and they have had to raise the wage paid to the magistrate astronomically to get anyone to even consider the job. This week is no different - when walking through town one day, an unfortunate civilian sees a leg sticking out of some freshly set concrete. After careful examination it is found to be the judges, and the rest of his body is found to be within the concrete shell. Appalled at the gruesome nature of this killing, the town's judge, AKAnotu, immediately decides that the perpetrators must be lynched. He arranges for a vote to be taken each day and the "winner" to be executed in a particularly gruesome manner. Of course, first, he hires 20 body guards to protect himself to ensure the mafia doesn't go killing him when he's not expecting it.

(a slight insignificant rule modification. To make the game more interesting, the judge can PM me the method of killing that he wishes to use on the lynchee each day. I will work it into the narrative)

Everyone has 1 vote, including the judge.

Let day one commence!

Hi. I woulda posted sooner but I was watching an awesome lego rendition of the Revolver Ocelot Boss from MGS 1... soo. How many investigations does the cop get then? Given that there is only one extremely long day..

No, no, they're separate days, but there is no night. So XKCDia has suddenly moved above the arctic circle in summer.

And each cop (not saying how many there are) gets one investigation per day.

That's enough!
The court sees no reason to further prolong this trial.
Nor is there any need for more time to decide the case against the defendant.
This case is extremely clear. I see no room for mis-interpretation of the facts.
This court finds the defendant, Nebuduck of the XKCD forums...
GUILTY
The accused will surrender to the court immediately...
...to be held pending trial at a higher court within a month from today's date.
That is all.
The court is adjourned!

Games like this really make you realise how luxurious knowing the roles is. For all we know, it might already be lynch or lose. The pacifist role intrigues me since I can't think of the best strategy for them really. The anarchist is essentially just mafia alligned without the mafia knowing them. The lack of role claims could also make the game volatile.

Indeed - that's why I thought it'd be quite interesting.

Now, it's taking a while to get started. May I suggest that you start discussing strategy? Maybe try to think of ways to work out how many mafia there are, that sort of thing. Maybe.

Strategy? We have almost 0 info. I can't see how we can establish the number of mafia, like ever... My head hurts

Question: Are all the roles you put up there in the game? Like, is the Necromancer or the guy with weak heart guaranteed to be here?

Well there are nine people I would guess that there are three. It would be amusing though if there were no mafia. We are just told there is and that we have got to find them.

You can think of ways of establishing how many there are, I imagine. But yeah, you need to get some sort of discussion going or the game will go no-where.

well, the maximum number of mafia is 3, assuming people can't have more than one role, and that pacifist can be anti-town (I'm 100% sure it can)

based presumably because the 3 mafia and other negative roles could start by winning. Although are we sure of existence of anarchist, pacifist etc?

From the rules:

Apart from the judge, I will choose how many of each of these roles there will be. It will be a number between 0 and N-1 (where N is the number of players - N-1 since one must be the judge).

So yes, it's a perfectly viable option for a role to not be present. As I said, the game would work with 4 people - in which case, I'd never be able to have one of each role, of course.

Well the pacifist and anarchist both want the same thing as the mafia would really. It could still become a game, based purely around lynching etc. It seems unlikely, but it is plausible.

Well, the mafia need to control >50% of the vote in order to lynch the judge. So I don't really think the pacifist can win with the mafia.

But if the mafia win early, then there are less kills, and so the pacifist is more likely to be successful. The alignment of the pacifist is undoubtedly interesting, but I think they'll sway towards mafia, that is how I would play them...

Aaah, this thread exploded when I wasn't looking. Um, I agree with our mighty Nebuduck that strategy is the way to go in this game. It's all rather confusing with the unnumbered roles and forbidden roleclaims, so we'll have to work something out. An idea would follow that sentence, if I had one... :(

I think that the anarchist is a bit of a bum role. As soon as he is lynched the mafia "know" that no one else will help them. So they will wait till they defiantly have the majority. Kinda a pointless role if you ask me...

Although i guess he is there to help the pacifist out. Pacifist only wins if he and the anarchist vote for the king before the townies lynch a single mobster.

Am I right?
