Help me Name my (SomethingSomething)!

Postby vortmax » Thu Aug 28, 2008 4:32 pm UTC

I'm building a new server here at work to centralize my network monitoring. It just sits there and watches the network and attached devices, and sends out alerts if something isn't working right.

(It's going to run distributed Nagios + cacti + smokeping if you wanted to know)

I have the software and the configuration all worked out....but it lacks a cool hostname.

I need something uber geeky that fits the profile of this server....It sees all but is powerless to do anything but report back.

I figure there is no other place on the net geekier, so I'm calling on the xkcd geek collective to name my server!

Well, you could find the name of a Watcher who doesn't actually interfere. Unlike Uatu. Interfering bastard.

Ah, I was going to suggest Daedalus but it looks like you've already decided.

If I'm allowed a second suggestion, then Helios would also be cool.

Hunting usually involves rifles, or at least a crossbow or bow. Unless you're wanting me to go oldschool spearhunting on you. I will. Just for you. Because of your hat.

Do I need to smuggle you in some guns, or can you get those on your own?

I mean, what with me being an American, in Kentucky, that obviously means I own 12.75 guns, as that's how many the average person here owns, so I've got a few to spare.

Well, if you can get them past customs, I wouldn't mind a few; I'm a little short on guns at the moment, what with all this haggis and these kilts I'm spending my money on (which just happens to be shiny stones, because I live in a small backwards country). If you wouldn't mind sending me some of that extra .75, I could maybe hack together something from the junk that's lying around in my garage...
