Ok, a thread to discuss meet-up prospects.

I'm all for Edinburgh, as it's the closest large place I can go to. And I don't think people would want to go to Dundee.

A weekend would probably be ideal too. Over to you guys.

Saturday night/Sunday would be best for me. I work Saturdays.

Also Lolsaur normally visits on Saturdays and Sundays anyway, so that would be pretty awesome

I'm 17, so pubs are a maybe, maybe not. Quite possibly not. I'm also for Edinburgh, though - fifteen to twenty minutes on the bus for me.

Are endiburgh pubs strict during the day? I never tried that sort of thing there, but usually here they don't care as long as you at least look 18.

I'm up for a bit of edinburgh when i get the cash, and it would definantly have to be a weekend thing, cause my course is pretty hefty all week long.

the blind poet is a pub in edinburgh. From my experiences so far nowhere is really strict with ID as long as you're not the one buying the alcohol.

Edinburgh's good for me too, about an hour's bus journey. In fact I will be back there next weekend for a birthday, so Sunday should be fine for me too.

In terms of strictness of locations in Edinburgh, under 18's aren't normally ID'd at the doors in the decent pubs and you could just not drink if you wanted anyway Cheese, it'll probs be fine.

Blind Poet looks cool, though I've never been there before, I second it.

I'm not too sure about Sunday nights, Saturdays should be fine for me, though. I'm 18 in March, so I could just wait until then before coming out... I'll just wait and see what the rest of you organise before I decide if it's worth going.

I'm told that the Blind poet is near Potterow, so pretty central (West Nicholson Street for those who know the street names). This handy review should give you an idea of how it is. More my kind of place, tbh. I liked it, anyway.

It's near most of the university buildings. Once you're own the high street it should only be a 15 minute walk I think. So maybe a 25 minute walk from Waverly Station?

They've normally got cool exhibitions on and you can just wander around there for ages. Unfortunately, there's huge building work going on in the Old Royal Museum, so you can't get in there (it was always my favourite place in Edinburgh).

Good idea, Frogs... that would mean a daytime meet, which is easier to get to and from. And it's fairly central, too, so we could wander to the Gardens or whatever if we wanted to.

Yeah that's the one, the Scottish History bit is still open and it's still pretty cool, even without the blue whale skeleton, but the old bit's going to be closed for a couple of years according to the website .

I think some of the displays are still open. I visited with Lolsaur a couple of weeks ago and they had an exhibit about living in really cold conditions and the one with all the animals (which freaks me out, so we didn't go through.)

I don't know how much is open and how much they've closed off though.

Edit: Also if we are meeting during the day Sundays are best for me.

I don't know anyone but I'd love to come to a meet up! The Scotland contingent has really expanded since last time I checked. All your suggestions sound great so I have nothing to add, although I'll second (third, forth?) the Blind Poet or a museum. *thumbs up*

My friend has offered to arrange her housewarming party in Aberdeen to not-coincide with the meet up as long as I can tell her what date it'll be by the end of this week.

Since I think King Of Frogs said he's be here anyway this weekend, maybe this Sunday if that's alright with everyone?

I really need to give her a date because I feel bad otherwise.

I should be able to come on a Sunday, I'd turn up sometime after about 1:30pm. The museum's open 10 to 5, so that leaves plenty of time to look round the exhibits. I don't know when everyone else would want to begin - and does anyone have suggestions for how to find each other?

How about meeting up at about 2 in the foyer of the museum? That should give everyone time to get there in time to look around and means that (probably) when we get out if anyone wants to go out to eat (if we can find somewhere relatively cheap, 'cause I don't think my money is going to last very long...) we shouldn't be too early for that.

Also, about recognising each other. Is wearing something xkcd related an option? I don't have anything but Lolsaur has a couple of t-shirts and I'll be showing up with him. I don't know about anyone else though and I'm kind of stuck for ideas. My brain doesn't seem to be working properly at the moment.

I don't have anything xkcd-related to wear, I'm afraid... but I should be able to find other people with xkcd shirts on easily enough. Maybe the PM-ing of mobile numbers would help?

I suppose we could identify each other by quoting xkcd very loudly in the foyer, i.e. claiming that the reception desk is photoshopped or shouting "I won the game!". More seriously we could just hold up bits of paper with "xkcd" written on them. Not so sure about sending my mobile no. over the intertubes.

New plan: We meet up at the museum at 2 on Sunday. During the time before then everyone posts some sort of description of what they're planning on wearing or something to make them easily identifiable. (For example Lolsaur will probably wear a no raptors t-shirt, and you'll be able to identify me because I'll be the girl with him.) On Saturday night I'll send everyone that's posted to confirm they're coming a PM with my mobile number in case anyone gets extremely lost (which I might not be able to help with, but I'll be able to get directions from someone), there is an emergency and they can't make it (in which case we'll know not to wait) etc. Just in case. y/n?

(I've given so many people my number during fresher's week and the first 2 weeks of term I actually don't really care about giving it out. I still like to know how many people have my number, hence why I'm not posting it right now.)

Sounds good - I have a feeling I may have to last-minute cancel, but hopefully not. That's the main reason I was wanting some means of long-distance communication - so people could be informed if someone wasn't going to turn up, and everyone else wouldn't be waiting around for that last person.
