I was searching for a thread like this a couple weeks ago and completely managed to miss this.

Oh, well, on to pets. My wife and I have 2 cats:

Dory (affectionately called fatty since she's a little overweight):

my immediate family collectively owns:
1 dog (pepper, golden retriever)
1 cat (milo, probably orange tabby)
1 snake (diamond, albino corn snake)
4-5 fish (nameless, several varieties)

I used to own mice, but that was long ago.

will post pictures when I get back home, I have no pictures of any animals on this computer.

Thready necromancy time, because I cannot resist showing off my critters.

Speckles, whom I bought when he was 19" long, back in 1993. For scale, the darker log in the picture is ~5 inches in diameter. He's approximately 9 feet total length, though accurate measurements are hard once they're this big.
Image

Lucy, a ball python I rescued from a neglectful owner ~11 years ago.
Image

Darwin, my 4' long blue tegu lizard (large carnivorous lizard from South America, highly convergent with monitor lizards). ~ 7 years old.
Image

My wife's bearded dragon, Squishy, now ~ 5 years old
Image

And her Leopard Gecko, unknown age, adopted ~1 year ago.
Image

Peyton, our adopted greyhound. He just turned 7, we've had him for ~ 1 year.
Image

Our current foster greyhound, Sybyl, from Guam. Hopefully she'll find a forever home soon.
Image

And finally our newest 4 pets, all gotten within the past 3 weeks, all in a community tank.

3 Northern Leopard frogs - Bender, Fry and Leela. The photo can't really show their colors, but they have a lustrous metallic sheen to them.
Image

And Nibbler, a baby map turtle. Unlike most pond turtles, which reach dinner-plate sizes, the males of his species stay less than 4" in shell length. And since incubation temperature determines sex, it's pretty easy to be sure to get a male. He'll retain those intricate markings throughout his life (probably over 30 years).
Image

That's the current menagerie, and it's unlikely to increase until we move somewhere bigger and/or have more money, though hopefully Sybyl will be adopted and we'll get another foster.

Thanks! Darwin's a great pet, very 'tame', though a bit aloof (I sometimes describe him as like a scaly cat). I'd definitely recommend a tegu when you have room & time - IME, they tend to a lot more trustworthy than monitors (even 'tame' ones can lash out), though less active.

Oh me yarm Nibbler is so cute!

My wife actually squeed when we got him. He's gutsy for his size, too - he'll tolerate being picked up, will chase the frogs, etc.

My sister's white Icelandic mare just died. Oh well. Something about its intestines.
She's crying (my sister, not the dead horse), screaming how she "didn't get to say goodbye", and my mother's arguing that the horse doesn't care.

Yep, in providence for probably the next 3-4 years. The herps have come from widely assorted sources - the boa was from a small breeder which I think is out of business now, the ball python was a resuce from a FL petshop, the tegu from the Daytona reptile expo, the beardie from a CA petshop, the gecko was adopted but originally from a RI petshop, the turtle was from a large commerical breeder, and the frogs were adopted from the lab at Brown I'm in.

PETS!!! Squeeeeeeeeee!
Oh so cute and so many... hedgehogs and shrimps and snakes and cats and dogs and frogs and lizards and turtles...!
I'll join in with the pic-posting soon, although I'm not a photographer and don't have particularly strange pets (well, they're not strange species but I'd say some of them are pretty strange characters).

Edited to join in! As someone who loves to have pets and has grown up always having them, living in a student flat with "No pets allowed" on the lease means that the term 'Pet' has come to be applied to a much larger variety of creatures that would usually acquire such a title.
Spoiler:
Image
This is Skanky. His real name's Daisy and he actually belongs to a film lecturer who lives near us, but before we knew that we stuck a note under his collar asking who he belonged to because he was always coming around (& the collar was a recent addition). He came back with an addition to the note that read "He's not ours, but he always comes around here too", signed off by a flat several houses down the street. Hence the name 'Skanky'. Having lived in the same flat for the last 4 years I've become ridiculously attached to him, despite the fact that he has the loudest and quite awful sounding 'meow' I have ever heard, and will NOT be quiet for a second unless you're petting/playing with him.

Image
Sulis, the spider who lives in our bathroom, with her some of her many offspring. She took days to throroughly suck the juices out of the poor guy who fathered her babies, and then dumped his body as far away from the main part of her web as was possible without actually leaving the web. She's super-cute though: has some gorgeous patterning on her hairy brown backside, and I love the way that if she feels frightened by one of us turning the bathroom light on at night she'll scuttle away back into her den to hide... with the major failing point that she can't actually fit in the crack at the edge of the windowsill, so her massive backside is still sticking out. It's like a child with the "if I can't see them then they can't see me" mentality.

Image
This was Pūrerehua, one of my Monarch butterflies from last season. I don't think I'll get any this year, my swan plants are in a much too exposed place and are looking very wind-battered.

Image
And finally, Phoebe - my main (real) pet, but she lives with my parents back in my home-town  I adores her!
