Anywhoo... I'm afraid that I really can't reconcile the term "deathdoom" and "peppy" in the same sentance, even without knowing a lot about doomdeathydoomyness.

Well, if you're going to tell me you have the Cremé Brulee of depression and I get a steak, I'll like the steak but god damn if I didn't want the Cremé Brulee.

Am I the only one who didn't really understand that analogy? O_o;

Katatonia is a bit upbeat as deathdoom goes.
Possibly the Cremé Brulee:

So, I got tired of the fact that the appearance of my band name in my signature made my posts on this forum the dominant result when googling for my music. Anyway, if you think I might happen to be a good musician, you can test this theory
here.

Hmmm... Well that's better. I'd rank it as 'Caviar' of depression.

sorry, yeah - the original studio version of the song is a lot more non-peppy - in recent years they've stopped playing doom and started playing a sort of "Desperation-rock" thing (very emo influenced, randomly) - it's still good, but it's very different style. but their first few albums are just fucking oppressive.
i love shape of despair to bits, but i tend to think of them as more of a funeral-doom thing than a death-doom thing, which is why i didn't link to them the first time.

that's true, I'm wandering a bit off-topic with the funeral-doom-ish-ness. I was just looking for the Cremé Brulee of depression.

oh, then the creme brulee of depression is tragedies, by funeral. it's not a nice album. not at all. seriously. that album can kill at a distance of 90 metres.

Wow; I never expected to see a thread about doom metal on this forum. This is awesome! My Dying Bride have always been my favourite; I'm also a big fan of Mourning Beloveth.
Some great doom bands which I *think* haven't been mentioned are
Esoteric (Britain) and
Wreck of the Hesperus (Ireland), the latter being one of my current favourites. WotH tend to focus on slower, slightly creepy music -- similar to Khanate, except less harsh. :)
This game won't run on my computer!
I should probably upgrade my UNIVAC...

inky: esoteric are one of my favourite bands ever! in fact, they are one of the 2 bands that really turned me on to doom in general (the other being unholy). i didn't mention them because i don't think of them as death-doom - for the same reason i didn't go into funeral and sludge styled bands, although frankly it's hard to pick exactly what it is that esoteric do. except that it's marvellous.
and it's nice to see another khanate fan here, too
we could quite easily do an intro to funeral doom here, or an intro to sludge, or anything of the sort - if anyone is interested, just say so and links will be posted.

mmmm, khanate.
Wreck of the Hesperus is one of those bands I've been meaning to check out for about a year and half now...
