Julia Stiles video (to go with comic #130)

Postby xkcd » Wed Jul 19, 2006 4:00 am UTC

Here's the baby-Julia-Stiles-hacker clip that my dad helped me copy from our old cassette tape:

http://xkcd.com/julia_stiles.mpg

edit: Nerd65536 cleaned up the audio a bit. Thank you!

You have to turn your speakers up and it's pretty muffled (13-year-old VHS tape). If one of you kind folks wants to clean it up a little by at least upping the volume, that would be excellent! I don't know how to do that with mencoder.

edit:Here's an xvid version with normalized audio, thanks also to Nerd2^16:

xvid version.

I used to love that show.

I don't know how you do it, but you keep making comics that really speak to me.

Audio Filters in Mencoder

Postby nerd65536 » Wed Jul 19, 2006 10:55 pm UTC

Just throw
Code: Select all
-af volnorm=1

in as one of the options when using mencoder. That will normalize (maximize without distorting) the audio.

It's in the man page for mencoder under Audio Filters.

Aww, thanks! But I like to think it's just Julia Stiles speaking through us both.

Here's the XviD version with normalized audio: http://www5.spread-it.com/dl.php?id=51350cd9a05d3c1ff3a2e5dd0a55e3ec2d14476f

Thanks! I just replaced the xvid version in my original link with that file.

If you wanna give me the mencoder string to convert that xvid to an mpeg-2 .mpg file, I'll happily replace the other as well.

Code: Select all
mencoder julia_stiles.xvid.avi -o julia.mpg -of mpeg -mpegopts format=mpeg2 -ovc lavc -oac lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video acodec=mp2:abitrate=128

That should give us a good file.

I got a partial encoding with a slew of intermittent errors, ending with this:

ERROR: SCR: 31.724, VPTS: 31.698, DELTA=-0.026 secs
ERROR: SCR: 31.755, VPTS: 31.732, DELTA=-0.023 secs
ERROR: SCR: 31.771, VPTS: 31.765, DELTA=-0.006 secs
ERROR: SCR: 31.817, VPTS: 31.798, DELTA=-0.019 secs
ERROR: SCR: 31.833, VPTS: 31.832, DELTA=-0.001 secs
File not found: 'acodec=mp2:abitrate=128': 0min 5mb A-V:0.018 [830:224]
Failed to open acodec=mp2:abitrate=128
Cannot open file/device.

The file is okay for a while but then the sound and video start to screw up.

Thoughts?

I think I forgot a colon after mpeg2video (I make typos too often )

I want to sample that. Quite noisy for that though.

Thank you, nerd65536! I've used those versions for the two.

Frankenstein, yeah, it's tough. Try a large library, they might have it. Not likely, though.

If anyone wants a clean copy of the episode, GPN (the company that sells PBS's shows) still has it available in their store:
http://gpn.unl.edu/elem_product.asp?catalog%5Fname=GPN&category%5Fname=Ghostwriter&product%5Fid=565%2E013
It's a bit pricey, though.

I'm crying tears of joy out of my ears after hearing that clip. Out of my ears, people. Clearly this is not healthy- someone go call an ambulance or something!

hmm, I hadn't noticed how old this thread is...
But if anyone is still interested I fixed up the audio a bit...
I cleaned out the noise and homed in on Julia Stiles' voice,
which leaves the other character sounding like she's in a storm drain but hey. :?

http://rapidshare.de/files/34799675/jul ... 2.avi.html
[ I know rapidshare sucks. I'll be glad to upload somewhere else if need be ]

ok, I feel like I've been stalking a 12yr old girl for the past hour

moving along...

A good listen, along these lines is a 30 min talk "the Mentor" gave at H2K2.
He reads "The Conscience of a Hacker" (aka Hakers Manifesto) which he wrote in 1986 and offers additional insight.

enjoy.
