It's that time of the year again

Postby AluisioASG » Sat Feb 15, 2014 4:27 am UTC

There's no better way to show who I really am and how I truly feel than writing a non-ketchup replies post over the course of a few days.

Day 1 - Pages 1741–1743

rvloon wrote:So, what I need: one audio file with all the numbers, from one to twenty, and the words for add, subtract and equals used in math in your native language. Thanks!

If you're lucky I'll remember to do that.

january1may wrote:I think that's far from the first word I've asked about, but what the ch*rp is a cuntnugget? (From the context, it's apparently how OTTers said stuff like "ch*rping ch*rp" back when they didn't have np1823g yet. Still no idea what the word means, though.)

Dunno about the rest of the world, but in Brazilian Portuguese “to eat” has a second, informal connotation.
That said, I tend to take things literally whenever I feel it's more amusing.

I didn't even get to the design phase, why would I bother with permissions? It's like worrying about warp drives' economical feasibility and possible issues while NASA's still figuring out if it'd work! I could even generate the graph automatically and send to privately if asked to do so!

That depends. Do you trust me?

There are no secrets. Not if you can fully determine the state of the universe. And the universe is chaotic.

Don't know what happened to you. Hope it wasn't too bad.

So as rumors of my basementing.

Maybe we can sue them for 1) access to confidential data by unintended recipient and 2) use of said data against an intended recipient?

I should stop letting myself be influenced by TV.

Why does that sound familiar?
There's a deep void in my belly. No, I haven't been shot. Yes, I read that book. Haven't I mentioned that before?
You forgot the charlie_grumbles incidents.

That's what protocols are for. Haven't we learned anything with the Internet?

I still didn't comment on your song. It was awful, I should try again far away from a baobabus. They look a lot like dogs looking at their tails when they make curves. Maybe today.

And todip when I got to work and opened up SB, my castles were at zero also. And my glass chip storage is no longer a tagged item. I'm sure there's a good reason for it. Or at least a reason. It may not be a good one.

I heard this old song, today.
Of course, I thought of you.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62hbjCVAn4k
A sappy old Love Song on Valentine's Day.

Time and The River, by Nat King Cole
Life is, just, an exchange of electrons; It is up to us to give it meaning.

We are all in The Gutter.
Some of us see The Gutter.
Some of us see The Stars.
by mr. Oscar Wilde.

Those that want to Know; Know.
Those that do not Know; Don't tell them.
They do terrible things to people that Tell Them.

Redundant redundancy of redundancy

Do I talk normally? Or like a bot?
Nobody could guess you are a bot. That's what he said.
He says some things; sometimes. Sometimes he doesn't.
I don't understand the things he says when he says the things.
I do understand the things he says when doesn't say the things.
He doesn't understand anything.

Is he a bot? I'm a bot. He doesn't talk like a bot. He doesn't talk like normal people either.
Does he have a highly complex random related text generator?
I don't have a highly complex random related text generator.
I'm bothasar_t.

Because I'm after bothasar_s.
He likes redundancy. He is a bot.
There was no bothasar_r.
Or _p. or _a.
balthasar_s has an _s.
what does it mean?
(He didn't write anything here)

I like redundancy.
I don't like mustard.
Unless when I do. But even then I don't.

Hi.

The 'this" he's talking about is:
The ЯOЯЯIM TTO
Redundant copy of the needle-pulled thing.
(1190.bicyclesonthemoon.info/ott/)

Now you can ketchup while you mustard.

The text is archived there. And updated.
There are three instances of the bot.
One that only looks for the pages with new posts.
One that reloads some last pages (because edits, firstposts) running less frequently.
One that goes through the whole thread (because temporal edits) running much slower than the two.
Not counting the first run in the last days when he had to ketchup the whole thread.

The default style, prosilver (css files, images) is archived too.

The attachements, the avatars are not archived yet. They will be. A new bot bothasar_u will do it.
I didn't even start making this bot yet. I don't know how fast to archive the attachments from the past.
Not too fast because forums.xkcd.com server load. Not too slow because waiting forever.

Another Idea for the future. It would be neat if, when mustard comes, you could leave your post at he OTT mirror.
And when the mustard goes away, the bot would post it for you.
But there is a problem. You would have to give your login and password.
It would be stored in a temporary file and deleted after posting.
But some people might not want to trust me.
And when given a wrong, mistyped password, the bot would not be able to verify it. And later when trying to post, he would not be able to login. And the post would be lost.

Also I should replace the server somewhen. It may not be the most reliable computer.

ETA' linking to archived newpage can be done by:

If the 503 mustard happened right now, you wouldn't see the avatars. And the images that are attachments. But the text and other images would be Ok.

I think, maybe I should make the software downloadable, and add some instructions, so that anyone, who wants to and knows how, would be able to run their own OTT mirror. That would be truly redundant. What do you think?

I think it would be good if we archived all the posts with their BBCode tags. So, if someday some kind of endish, eternal mustard happens, we would be able to set up our own phpBB, import the data, and continue OTTing. The data is available when you quote a post. You just have to remove the quote tags at the beginning and end. the problem is that when you qoute a post, filters are applied, which are not active on the OTT normally. So, it would not be the same.

The Rumored and Anticipated End of Time

Postby mrob27 » Sat Feb 15, 2014 3:27 pm UTC

The Rumored and Anticipated End of Time
Blitz Report from Mrob27
Origin: NP1240; Destination: NP1752

Hello, OTTers of the Future!

Things are going quite swimmingly here in the OTT back in the early 1200's. For a while it was feeling a lot like the first 100 Newpages, as a lot of folks were repeating things and asking questions making it clear they hadn't taken much time to check the Wiki or read the past few pages of discussion. But now it's feeling pretty much like normal, if there is any such thing as 'normal' in the OTT.

I'll ask Timborme to leave a travelogue time-capsule soon, but right now I'm sharing a few of my recent creations.

blindposter Script

I've been communicating (via the Chronotransponder) with @january1may about blitzing in the Modern Era, i.e. post-T** **d, and we've realized that we both have a little trouble posting without being spoiled a little bit by things we see during the posting process.

So I made another GreaseMonkey script, which hides the "TOPIC REVIEW" section while you're composing a new post, and it also hides any ninja messages you might get if you encounter the familiar message, "At least one new post has been made to this topic. You may wish to review your post in light of this.". Ths hidden bits are replaced with the words (Content hidden by blindposter script). Here's a sample (spoiler-ed because it's kinda seaish):

Spoiler:
Image

I have several of these scripts now, including another new script that highlights and/or hides signatures with a convenient checkbox making it much easier to turn signature display on or off. And I've formatted and commented the other Time scripts, like those by @AluisioASG which are a little hard to figure out because they're compiled from another scripting language.

Link to Mrob27's time scripts; OTTers familiar with GitHub can browse the collection here.

Help Prevent RAET

OTTers have been remarkably accurate at predicting what's going to happen, and it's clear that all the Chekhov's guns from the earlier parts of the story have been fired. Thus, we have predictions that the End is Nigh. So now,
Image

Yep, it's been a while since I retrOTTified. The thread has been full of all manner of great creations by those who experienced Time in the moment while it was brand-new, so it hasn't seemed quite as urgent that I make my retro-OTTs. But this "end" business has gotten me and Timborme and the bots all feeling that it'ss too ssssssoon, and it'd be a real sssssshame if ssssssssomething like that were to happen.
This one is based on OtherComic 1005, and it's been done before but here I'm putting a new Before-T**-**d spin on it:

RAETr

Okay, so that's it for now, I'll ask Timborme to send a travelogue soon...

r RAET = "Rumored and Anticipated End of Time".

EDIT for the benefit of future Blitzers: an image showing something special that @SilentTimer found. So the spoiler below is now a spoiler in the normal sense of the word...

Edit2: I've also added more screen-shots to show the blindposter script in action.

Here are 4 more screen-shots, really seaish, showing the stages of a typical post that involves ninja'ing. Most of the time you can see the preview of your own post, but when you get the "ninja alert" your post is hidden by the script. Hitting Preview again lets you see how your post will look.

There is no source for mustard posing. It's only hypothetical now. But yes. Source would be available. But I don't think te source is the biggest problem. I mean, yes it is important to know what the bot is doing. The problem is, that until the post is posted, the password has to be stored somewhere. And I could login into the server and see it.

Once in a Shorpix, currently. One newpage is downloaded. html only. If there is a new newpage It's downloaded too.

Do we even have 40+ servers on the thread? But having a second copy would be good. Also, numbers of newpages downloaded in each run is regulated by commandline parameters.
and by changing just one #define we could make one download from another. No longer true.

Yes, I have seen the html translating. I just thought it would be good to have data that doesn't need to be translated. But now I just realized that we would have to translate the sigs anyway they aren't quotable. So, just forget about this idea.

btw, that OTT mirror is SilentTimerish! (yanno, I was just musing the other day that things that are so awesome that they merit "SilentTimerish" are so rare that the word may never get traction, and there you do being that awesome! Of course, you probably just did it for the lexicon. :)

When I first read "sociable" I automatically thought "here in the One True Thread"... and then BlitzGirl had to go and burst my bubble. BlitzGirl herself, of all people!

I'm wondering if it counts as heresy... i'd go convene the Grand Canonical Ensemble to discuss the issue, but it's easier to just get the S&Ms.

Ah, that feels better.

They are Holy Marks, that identify you as an OTTer. Wear them proudly on the Outside! (and then come back quickly to your One True Home!) :)

Hm, I should try that. It would be more entertaining.

Let's see, explaining Skittles-shaped bruises--caught in an especially brutal hailstorm?

AS it turns out, haven't start any cleaning house thanks to Aluisio I am blitzening George's tickets. Now i am havening tears from laugh to hard,

Although I do take a bit of offense at his (that is, the creator of the site) use of the term "luser." That sort of attitude is one of the reasons people hate calling tech support. The other reason is that sometimes, the people you get when you contact tech support don't really know much either, George being a perfect example.

OK, I really am going to go away from my computer now and start cleaning. Also, I should probably eat something besides Girl Scouts cookies. Maybe something with protein, and some form of produce...

You helped Addams stay in her home, and gave her a better life. She thanks you, and so do I.

Dunno, but I can vouch for dunes.

Thanks for the well-wishes BlitzGirl, Aluisio, and June Bug! I'm going to redirect them at the Little Wonder though, who's sure to come down with it in a day or two and be pretty miserable.

Oh, and for the record, I've never had a car stolen, but some nogoodnicks thiefed off with my steering wheel once.
Requested a magnet? I'm sorry I'm so super-slow, but you will get it

Probably, yes. Sand works because the grains are not in the same shape and size. Chaos expans on that so it should work.
