Thanks ZoomanSP! :) Are you still the record holder of wearing different hats over hats over hats over your head? And, is the biggest turtle in you avatar another hat for something even bigger so it goes both ways but off-camera?

I don't know whether I'm the record holder, but I'm still proudly wearing my hat from Vytron's haberdashery!

There is a next phys frame:
120.
Image
Spoiler:
Wait for it.

And the enhancement:
Image
"The aether's true time" - I see the aether's still strong.

"Everything which moves gets contracted" - moving relative to the aether or relative to you?
Lorentz on in this frame seems to suggest the first,
while the hidden Einstein the second option.

So we reached Lorentz contraction.
Important thing to realise here:

Even if moving objects relative to you
will from your frame of reference
be contracted according to Lorenz contraction,
it doesn't mean you will see it as contracted this way:
Because you don't see the actual object,
only the light coming to you from the (moving and contracted) object.

For example:
Something is moving towards you very closely to the speed of light.
In this situation,
the light from the end of the object
needs to travel for a long distance and long time before it reaches the front of the object.
So when you see it,
the light that reached you from the end of the object is from a much earlier time (when the object was much more far away from you) than the light that reached you from the front of the object.
So even though from your frame of reference the object is contracted it will appear actually elongated!
Similarly, moving away from you it will appear even more contracted than it is.
And moving sideways / diagonally gives an even more interesting result:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terrell_rotation

(That wikipedia page has some interesting links, like this one, for example: https://www.spacetimetravel.org/)

Also see xkcd 1233.

AluisioASG wrote:c.xkcd.com is running about 134 mnp late, from the HTTP response it gives. I'm now logging that to confirm balthasar_'s hypotheses.
We can actually make it into a physics excerise:

At 25.03.2013, 04:00 UTC a space ship leaves Earth and moves away from it with a constant speed.
At launch time the ship's clock was synchronised with Earth.
The ship is sending is sending messages to Earth each hour (initially also at half hour but that's not relevant) according to its internal clock.
The messages travel to Earth at light speed.
On Earth, the time delay between the messages is slightly longer than a hour,
so that the message for 14.08.2019, 17:00 was late by 0.134h.
What is the speed of the space ship and how far away from Earth is it now?
(The ime difference is a result of 2 things: time dillation, and time to reach the Earth at light speed)

Also is it a coincidence that the server name is c.xkcd.com?

Redundant:

Edited to fix date 14.8.2019, not 17.8.2019, I confused the hour with the day.

A new message from GLR to his German readers:

GLR wrote:Triff Randall Munroe in Berlin am 15. Oktober 2019!

I'm writing in smaller than usual because I'm not sure whether mentioning GLR's mistake is heresy...

Thanks for the formula balthasar_s, I've added it to my newpixometer script. It seems to be right most of the Time.

Edit:
Relativistic time dilation in Time. What an appropriate thing to do, if only it were deliberate.

What is the speed of the space ship and how far away from Earth is it now?

I checked at the latest UNG and also measured 134 millinewpix. My measurement error in mashing F5 is enough to overwhelm any other calculation errors here. It's about the same amount of time it takes for light to travel 78 gq (78×109 cueballs), very close to the distance from the Earth to the Sun. So the xkcd Time server is now about as far from us as the Sun.
Travelling that distance over a period of 6.3 yips (since the start of Time) would require a velocity of about 1.5 kq/mNP (kilocueballs per millinewpix), or about twice the speed of sound at sea level. It's not fast enough for the Lorentz transformation contribution to be significant (compared to the plain old Newtonian travel time at the speed of light).

For about 134 millinewpix each frame, there is a disagreement due to the time it takes UNGs to propagate here from the xkcd botplanet :-). I haven't done any automated test of the epilogue frame logs, but I've thought about it.

It's lucky I got to title of Hotdog Vendor rather than Panther Salve Distributor, which easily could have been the case given that mustard was removed from the above panther panel. Funny that came up after I semi-ottified a song relating to it. The original was a minecraftification of yet another song.

1190: Time: OH HAI, I OTTIFIED YOUR JAVASCRIPT

Postby mrob27 » Sat Aug 17, 2019 1:53 am UTC

I've altered the Epilogue botvoting algorithm a little more. Now the frame's state as seen closer to the middle of each nopix-interval is considered more definitive. Specifically, the attempts made at :15, :30, and :45 count 2x, 3x, and 2x (respectively) as much as the attempts made at :05 and :55.
This moderately improves the likelihood of bots collectively getting the right answer in the presence of Randaltivistic® Time-dilation. It also fills in a little more of the epilogue history, including in the earlier yips when there were fewer botcastles in the mrobnet, and also in more recent period when the mrobnet had fewer bots active at any given time. For example:

Code: Select all

 Before:
 20140721  aEDCBAECDCBAED
 20140722             aEDCBADECDCB
 After:
 20140721  AEDCBAECDCBAED
 20140722             AEDCBADECDCB

 Before:
 20140801 EDBADECBCBAECBDAD
 20140802          BAECBDADCDCDBED
 After:
 20140801 EDBADECBCBAECBDADc
 20140802         cBAECBDADCDCDBED

aED becomes AED twice, and a couple cs are added (the c is small!)
