Re: 1190: "Time!?"

Oh, also, I believe this is the first occasion where either half of Cuegan has used both an exclamation point and a question mark at the same Time. Right!?
(For some reason I personally like putting the question mark first. Doesn't that make more sense?!)

Decree: Use an exclamation point and a question mark pairing in your post somewhere (if you so desire, of course).

asking "where?" is pretty cueball (ie. stupid), considering the telescope thing is pointed there.

I see 57005 people?

(Wow, it was so long since I last posted. Insane amounts of work with many looong ketchups, and when I finally caught up I was so used to only reading without posting so I kept quiet (my normal behaviour in real life). No more!)

I have been at the beach all wip. Yesterdip there were four LaPetites working on a sand structure as the tide was coming in. They were frantically trying to reinforce it against the rising tide, but I could see it was well below the high tide mark and would not survive the nix. The eldest, around 9 or 10 I would guess, saw me observing them and came over to me. She expressed her concern for the structure, and I noted to her that things weren't looking good. She looked up at me with resignation in her eyes. Then, because I couldn't resist, I said knowingly, "The ocean is big. It does what it wants."1 "Yeah," she said, and trotted back to her sisters to continue the fight.

I remained at the beach after they left, watching the moat of my own structure fill as the tide rolled in. Our goals had been opposite of one another; mine, to channel the tide to encircle my castle. Theirs, to build something to withstand the sea.

In the end both succumbed. Before I left them behind, I did my duty and completed the job, gently kicking over the castles and filling the holes with sand so wayward baby turtlemolpies would make it safely into the surf.

1 I know, it should be sea. But we're at the ocean.

That's heart… heart-something.
Oh, and nice to see you again!

For me, it depends. Is it a forceful question, then I'd use “?!”, but it it's a questionably exclamation, I'd use “!?”.
Megan wrote:Cueball!? What are you doing now?!

So in this case, I'd use “Where?!” as well.

Of course, if you don't want to choose, why not use an interrobang‽

I'm certainly no English scholar, not even a native speaker in fact, but couldn't the it refer to the discovery of the people itself? Or now that I think about it, Cueball's "Where?" asks for a place. And it is far away.

The discovery of the people isn't far away, though, it's right where they're standing. Image

This is a post from the Time Foundation. Once you reach this post, please report to the Future Present that you've reached Beacon Alpha.

You can use this Station's services to rest and get ready for the rest of your journey. All our services are designed based on almost one thousand pages of experience.
Our Tracker allows you to check how far have you gone and how much of your travel is still to be done, as well as the distance to the next station. You can clean yourself up at a private lavatory, then rest peacefully on a double-sized bed. Dinner and breakfast include food from all cultures, and you can eat as much as you want to. We also provide exclusive nighttime services for carriers of friendly codes.

Additionally, we offer a free train service between all Stations.

Ah, I love a nice rest stop, and what a grand one this is! While I've got my feet soaking in this brilliant little hot water massage-y tub, I just thought I'd jot a note thanking you for a great party back on page 1000.

I may not have posted, but I was there on the day, drinking it in. :) I nearly let out a little cheer to see BlitzGirl top the page with her gorgeous present - just perfect! And mscha's post at the end gave me a big grin too. Mom and pop? King and Queen? Mome and Pope? Head and Heart? Blood and Guts? Molpy and Molpy-hunter!? I don't know what the right words are for you two in this needle-pulled thing, but it was so right for you to bookend the celebration.

Food, fun, fireworks, friends - fantastic! And Yappo's singing at the afterparty... I'm still humming along. Epic!

Edited for the pope. :)

Also, a request for any near-future page pope: as a decree, challenge people to discuss the OTC and nothing but the OTC. With the usual (lack of) punishment for those who disobey; but perhaps a bit of comfy chair and chocolate for the first non-blind-poster to break the decree. Please note, this is not because I dislike the tangents of the OTT. I just think it would be a moderately entertaining challenge. :)

Hmm. The dust(cloud?!) is visible from the tower but not the ground, so it can't be that high over the horizon. (Assuming the dust is over the horizon.) Eye level in the tower is roughly twenty feet. At that height, assuming level ground, the horizon is about five and a half miles away. Judging by TimeMap the distance covered in frames 1123-1407 is eight tenths of a mile. (I'm assuming one Cueball length is six feet.) That means if the source of the dust is stationary and the pace going forward is similar to that of 1123-1407, Cuegan should encounter the people around 2000 frames from now, near the end of September.
With luck I'm wrong in a few of my assumptions.

I'm more worried about the way Megan's beginning to lean out of the tower than anything in the distance. What is she thinking?!?!/1

I started to write a patch when the Great Webmaster came, but never finished it. The BBCode to HTML code is done, but the reverse code has yet to be written.
I figured I should try to include it in phpBB's code, to make his life easier, so I studied it a little, but not far enough.
I thought recently I should finish it soon, since I'm on holidays since this wip-end. But if anyone wants to do it before me, feel free.

Here's what I've done so far :
new-spoiler.zip

See, that may be overcomplicating things. My solution (which I've just realized actually doesn't nest properly - I'll have to modify it some. I only tested for if it completely breaks down the forum style :P ) is completely vanilla, just a different way of doing spoilers via the bbcodes tab on the administrator control panel. Your solution may address the underlying problem, though, which is potentially better.

Well, the problem beforehand is that the phpBB parser is ugly. You can produce non-compliant HTML code by switching the closing tags, because the parser don't correct it itself. With the spoiler and the quote tags, you can even break the whole layout! (because they both use the blockquote element)
This parser is based on plain regex replacements, and you can understand fairly easily why that can't do the job right. Each tag has its dedicated methods, and some of them implement a stack-based mechanism to handle nested tags. And they reinvent the wheel for each of these "special" tags. And they need dirty hacks, e.g. because they turn special characters into entities right at the beginning. And they use that horrible e regex flag.
Why don't they use a tree-based system? That would allow them to have a robust, easily extensible system with automatic error correction. But oh well, who am I to judge. ;)

So I prefer to write something that won't use their system at all. In fact, I can probably fix the layout problem with this method too, by checking specifically for quote tags. I just found a good place to hook my code I think.

Ah ok. That explains why my spoiler code "works" then - it uses <dt> and <dd> instead of <blockquote>.

I don't know the phpBB administrator panel well enough, but will old spoilers still work properly if you change the markup? Messages are stored in HTML format and decoded back when you quote or edit them, so if the spoiler decoder is lacking you'll end up with HTML in the quote/edit forms, I guess. Unless the developers did the right thing this time.

Actually, no - posts are stored with bbcode in the database. Well, sort of. It looks more like this:

Code: Select all

This is some text! [b:683869]Hello, I'm some bold text! [/b:683869]

(Note: this is done from what I remember of seeing this several months ago, probably not entirely accurate. For instance, I don't remember if the close tag has the ID as well or not)
All formatting and html conversion is done by viewtopic.php which references a number of other files. So, yeah, if someone changed the html that the code produces, it would affect all past posts as well.
