Can anyone explain this New Yorker cartoon?

Postby Lenoxus » Sat Jun 08, 2013 12:37 am UTC

Link. From about a month ago.

Is the joke simply "The person speaking is kind of a voyeur." Surely there's more to it than that?

Yeah, yeah, "New Yorker cartoons are never funny", except when they are. But they still follow the convention of attempting something like a joke, generally.

A few associations pop up for me:
- big-city apartments can be ridiculously small and close together
- some people are ... a bit too interested in what's going on around them
- sometimes people don't have much to talk about.

In roughly descending order of relevance. Maybe.
The Supreme Ethical Rule: Act so as to elicit the best in others and thereby in thyself.

Okay. Yeah, the first one sounds most plausible. I have to say, it took me three "readings" of the image to realize it shows two buildings with little space in between, not some sort of weird "townhouse with shared window". And now I see that the confusion is necessary to the joke. Hmm. That might be funny as a running gag on a sitcom... Anyway, thanks!

I don't quite have anything interesting to discuss... so let's talk about my neighbor.

Who says that? </genuinely baffled>

Code: Select all

10 REM WORLD'S SMALLEST ADVENTURE GAME
20 PRINT "YOU ARE IN A CAVE (N, S, E, W)? ";
30 INPUT A$
40 GOTO 10

Lulled to sleep by the one-hertz chuckle of Linux logfile writes since 1997.
