It'd be neat to compare the median first pregnancy age to this.

I appreciate the solid guideline given by the Standard Creepiness Rule.
I was just wondering this week what my acceptable dating ranges were as I got older...

First off, most accurate formula ever.

Second off, thanks for completely restoring my faith in the possibility of having a good, geeky relationship.

There is another lesser-known and less frequently used addendum to this rule. Don't date anyone who is as old as or younger than your first child. This really doesn't really come into play until around 50 or so. (At age 50 youngest possible dating subject via SCR = 32. Thus, the same age as a child born at age 18 ). Since most people generally are married or whatnot at this age it is usually a non-issue. But nevertheless, dating someone younger than one of your kids = really creepy.

Edit: I hate emoticons that turn my 18 ) into this -> 18)

When your kids ask why you won't allow them to date before they turn 14 you can explain it to them with this formula.

Actually even with an increase dating pool the probability of finding the right girl is still quite low.

Bah the 30 year olds age limit doesn't follow the rules. It should be 22 - 46. Not 23, 23 is the limit for 32 year olds (rounding to evens). Also the dating pool might to start rise again (for males only) once they get quite old. Or at least their competition will drop significantly. Would be interesting to calculate. Of course those 80 year olds might go for 47 year olds.

My friend is dating directly on the Creepiness age, which means last year they were a creepy couple, and next year they won't be. He'll be pleased!

I'd say no, but since I'm trying to remember where my graphing calculator is, I'm hardly impartial.

but this means that at 15, you cant date a 13 year old, which really isnt all that creepy. the formula i came up with, it is creepy for someone to be dating someone who is over 125% of their age. so dont date younger than 80% of your age.. that formula doesnt look as cool, but it does seem right. so a 30 year old can date from 24 to 37.5

What was the formula for the upper bound?

Also, the creepiness rule is interesting.

Still I agree with the sentiment in the first panel - at age 26 all the girls I know are engaged/married, divorced or crazy (not the good kind of crazy either, the probably bipolar and should be on meds crazy).

Is it sad that most of the really nice girls I've met have been near either of the two ends of said range?

Anyway, this formula precludes same-aged children dating before both are 14 (the range becomes negative below that), which may sound a bit weird but isn't particularly creepy. If it can be called dating, that is. I remember that a cute girl in my grade was hitting on me back in elementary school. ;)

Perhaps the function should be extended as:

f(x) = x for x < 14

f(x) = x / 2 + 7 otherwise

Formula for the upper bound

Postby gringer » Mon Sep 10, 2007 5:16 am UTC

Code: Select all
    y = x/2 + 7
<=>2y = x + 14
<=> x = 2y - 13 + e^(i * pi)

Always thought that guy was creepy for being 23-24 and dating a college freshmen. Now there is mathematical proof! Yay.

heh, I like this one a lot, especially since I just started dating a 32 year old (I'm 21...) My friends and I like teasing him about the rather large age difference between us. According to this formula, he's a creepy old man. :-P

I've shown him some XKCD comics before, and I think he'll appreciate this one also.

ah :) no, unfortunately, that's not me. It would have been quite funny if it was though... I doubt any of my friends from real life are on the fora here, and it would be cool to find out one was.

I shall have to tell Ben that he's not the only Creepy Old Man out there though, i think he'll enjoy that.
