Compressing video and photo or I lose my job

Postby jewish_scientist » Sun Apr 29, 2018 4:42 pm UTC

I am going to make this as short as I can:

I need to compress a bunch of videos (~1 GB each) and photos (a few MB each)
143 GB total need to be compressed
Computer literally has no memory left (adding new video results in error)
I taught myself as much about compression as I could and adjusted the settings
I got a compression ratio of 100%
This is not even compressing
I am not sure of the account I am on has administrator privlages, so I may not be able to download a better compresser
The available compressers are RAR, RAR5, and ZIP

I used RAR5
Dictionary size = 128 MB
Compression mode = Best
Solid archive = yes
recovery record = Yes
delete compressed files = yes
store relative paths = no

If I cannot do this in the next 5.5 hours I may lose my job

Most video or audio formats are already compressed. Applying a lossless compression algorithm (like zip or rar) won't do anything, as you've seen.

If you need them to be smaller, you need to re-encode them with a different lossy method, but that's going to degrade quality.

They are from December 2017 to January 2018. Although I do not have permission to use lossy compression and I cannot ask for it, I think it is acceptable.

P.S. Files are .JPG and .MOV

What is a lossy compresser that I can use on Windows?

Is there any other way to significantly increase free memory (already cleaned out temp file and emptied the trashcan)?

ffmpeg is a nice piece of software for reencoding video
imagemagick handles batch image operations (such as compression) pretty well

try something among the lines of

Or just move some of the videos to a temporary location on another computer, then requisition a larger hard drive (or a better archiving scheme that doesn't rely on a whole bunch of large files all living on a single computer). Problem solved, both in the moment and longer term.

if your job hinges on a few GB of hard disk space, it deserves to be lost.

There is no other computer for me to send the data to.

The reason I would lose my job is not so much that there was an IT problem. My job is to make and upload the pictures and videos, so I technically spent 2 days not working while charging my boss. If gets worse if he knows that the majority of compression is waiting a.k.a. doing nothing.

Anyway, I did find a solution eventually. I only managed to compress ~50 videos or so, opening up ~46 GB in total. He told me that I should shoot for 20 videos a day, which comes out to ~20 GB per day. I suspect that he set the goal unrealistically high in order to make me work harder. I usually manage closer to 15 GB, so what I did is not that impressive.
