Shouldn't that Balrog be under an opponent's control, thematically? Which would probably require tapping the land for two mana to be worth it?

Maybe the opponent got Gypped.

Your opponent can only declare an attack you if he is attacking with at least 2^X creature this round.
You choose one of your opponent's attacking creature; that creature attack as normal. The rest of attacking creature deals no damage this turn.
