INTRO THREAD 2.0: INTRODUCE YOURSELF OR PERISH!

Postby apricity » Fri May 18, 2007 7:19 pm UTC

That's right, kiddies, this is the new and (hopefully) improved Introductions Thread! This thread is for you newbies to introduce yourselves, BEFORE you make any other posts.

The primary reason for this thread is so if you make a questionable post or thread that could have been made by a spambot, us mods can easily check to make sure you're not spamming, by going back to your first post and seeing your disclaimer that you're a real person, and didn't just start posting pr0n links everywhere (not that you should anyway, we know how to use Google (except that one girl.... -G)).

But the other reason for this thread is to actually share interesting things about yourself. Don't just post "Hey, not a bot, cheers." And none of this a/s/l junk, it's boring and we can't go off on fun tangents from it. (This thread has a tendency to go wayyyy off-topic.) We want to get to know you! And let's face it, if the most interesting thing about you is your status as a non-bot, you're kind of a boring person so you should get off your computer and go bungee jumping or mountain climbing. And THEN come back here to tell us all about it.

Enough with the rules, let's get to introducing!

Hey kids! Want to go paging through the lurching behemoth that was the old intro thread? Here it is!

::vanishes with a tip of the hat and a tap of the toe-claw::

Note: if you have already introduced yourself on the original Introductions Thread, you don't have to do it here

Does "don't have to" mean the same as "you'd prefer if we didn't"?

On Tue Aug 21, 2007 at 3:13 pm EST, tragedy struck Intro Thread 2.0. A user thought it would be funny to post a fake spam. A mod had a temporary failure at life at hit the wrong delete button. The thread was stabbed through the heart at a young age of 64 pages, and was sent to Spammer's Hell . . . or did it have time in Purgatory? Could it be revived? Davean was called upon to combine his skills as a Ninja, Pirate, and Master Coding Administrator to plunge into the depths of the great beyond and squeeze life into the unbeating heart of the thread. Intro Thread 2.0 was revived and momentarily returned to it's former glory. But a challenger had already arrived. A young fresh-faced Intro Thread the Third had come into being and had gained preference in the fickle eyes of the masses. The shell of Intro Thread 2.0 was left to be viewed, but could not be fed the content for which it yearned. It was left to slowly fall into the second page. Then the third. Forever falling from the top of the General Forum.

Right...

Why would we ever do something like that?

Honestly, have you no faith in us? We would never do such a thing!

COCKS! LAWL!

Alright, I suppose at least one of us would.

[realSpaz] I actually meant in the old intro thread. But still. Anyways, lots of mod-type do deface again! Wohoo![/realSpaz]

I'm introducing myself on the new intro thread because Ren told me to and the old intro thread's all closed up now.

I've been reading this comic for a while but only just joined the forum when I found out everyone was actually going to 42.39 , -71.13 on Sep. 23rd.

I live in CT and work as a chemist. In general I'm an all around math/science/art dork who paid her way through college working in a bakery.

I was one of the "boring" ones in the first thread, so I'll post again.

Hi, I'm from Hawaii and contain at least 4 different nationalities. A Full-time student for now, I have a tendency to necro old threads, go off on wild tangents relating to pop culture references/memes, for those of you new to the intartubes, and enjoy spam in a musubi. And roadkill in a bun.

(don't know where else to post) I have a problem with my pc not working and would like to ask this community about it. where should I open a topic/post or is this not the right place?

Note to future readers: This kind of question doesn't actually belong in the Intro Thread... if you want to find where a comment belongs, use the Search function on the main forum page, and if you can't find any threads that it might fit in, make a new post. Thanks! -L

Just out of interest, at what forum-age/postcount/whatever does one cease to be a "newbie" and become able to say "Welcome" in the Introduction thread?

SMALL PRINT:(I expect there'll be someone who says "When you stop needing to ask that question" or similar, but still).

I'll say it for you: "When you stop needing to ask that question."

Generally 10 to make sure you're not a bot, 20 to insure you're not a newbie, and n/2 + 1 where n = Belial's posts to raise suspicion that you're a raptor baiter. Although that number could also be anywhere on the imaginary number fieldzors as well.

There aren't any set limits. It's more like if you have something (constructive) to say in response to someone's introduction, go ahead and say it.

People consider newbie to end at 20+?

That seems ... generous.

There aren't any numbers set in stone. It's more like, if you have 50 posts but they're all in Forum Games (and the Intro post, obv), you're probably still a newbie, as in you don't really get the premise of the xkcd fora yet. If you have 20 posts but they're well thought-out and in a range of the different subfora, you're probably not a newbie anymore, as in you probably have sufficient understanding of the fora to get around.

And I'm the first one who actually *welcomes* Kelley to these forums since nobody used the word welcome. Welcome to the xkcd forums Kelley.

to what lanicita posted:

*laughs hysterically*

were that so, the intro thread would be at max. 12 pages now.

but she's a mod and therefore it is right. That's right. Now bow down to me.

Someone said something somewhere about "you have 100 posts, now you no longer are a n00b" but that might be a bit high.

You are a newb (=not fully acquainted with this forum) if you still need to learn who randall is. But I would say the definition of noob is not dependend of your post count. Rather, on the intellectual level of your postings, which leads to what lanicita had said.

Whe you should not post: look at me. I feel like I am in a "posting mood", but my brain has no more useful output left. My last 20 or so posts are not really intelligent. I must appear drunk.
