G'day. I guess I'm new here.
A bastion of humanity combined with intellectuality. Neat. I've been looking for a good forum for ages, and it sure as bollocks beats attempting to enlight the poor folks in the 1600's.

Like all good introductions, this is short.

However, I'm going to lengthy-it-up (so as to not start a new thread)
To be brief, I less-than-three poetry. Also music. Huzzah for Frank Zappa.
Anyway... I assume there would be more than a few poets here, and I've longed for some good criticism of a poem I've written. It was derived from this equation.

2(bottle of wine) + Angst

Here it is -

Boiled Down

Shall I compare thee to a Mid-Winter Tempest?
Thout art more arrogant and impulsive.
Since you threw the first stone,
Since when you first awoke,
Little more has changed.

In the morning you crawl.
In the afternoon you bear your frailties, crossed across your back as you shuffle towards
your final resting grounds.
Judas ignorantly stares out across the fellow condemned. He stares at you, naked and savage.

And in the evening, you crawl - not from inexperience, but from a maddening despair at your own helplessness.

When you can, you do, and when you can't, you bare your teeth and snarl, place your fingers in your ears and breed complacency.
Don't move.
Galaxies and outreaching Universe included.
What would you do then, huh? What would you do without your precious momentum? You would be justified.

Hello pseudoMuso! There are some excellent lines in that poem. Did you know we have sort-of a special forum for poetry and things?

Look! It's here!

I do hereby swear (affirm if religion prohibits oaths) that I am no bot. That is, no more than anyone else; I'm still not completely convinced on the whole "free will" thing. Regardless, if I'm a machine, then I'm a human machine, complete with bones, muscle, various organs, copious amounts of blood, and a bunch of loose water.

I don't have any intoductory poems for you, nor shall I put to metaphorical paper an involved description of myself and my activities. This would surely be tedious and read by few, and therefore would be better parceled out as smaller on-topic tidbits (Timbits?) in other threads. I will say that I am, like many here, a university student who likes (among other things) science and math. Though, truthfully, I am more aligned on the side of science than that of mathematics. Perhaps more importantly, I enjoy thinking about things and talking about ideas, which is (to me, at least) the true forté of these fora. I look forward either to numerous lovely discussions with you denizens, or else getting bored for reasons which will not be at all your fault and moving on to somewhere else. The future is such a mysterious place!

Hello new people/ex-lurkers, you all sound reasonably intelligent, possibly moreso than me. Enjoy the forums (especially the sex-based ones  ), the moderators aren't all that bad, so long as you don't mind reptiles.

I didn't know I was supposed to post in here. I thought this was to keep those annoying "hi I'm new here" threads out of serious discussion.

Anyway, posting this to get back to Serious Work.

Hi I'm HawkMatt and this might be my only post. The threads here are hilarious and relateable so I'm going to try and join in some.

btw, is it cool that I join just for the irrational fears and obsessive tendencies discussions? I lack the whole math/chemistry/physics thing.

Really? Cool, thanks.

Wheeee....! Hello, I'm DSK~ A quick peak around this place and it looks awesome. So much to talk about. I hope I can help contribute. Or just go shy as usual and admire from afar...

But yes... all that really needs to be known about me is I'm quiet and I love to draw. :D Oh, and I love to wear a top hat.

As long as it's not obnoxiously large, it's fine. Mine's pushing the boundaries on how big's obnoxiously large, I'm afraid, so you can use that as a baseline.

EDIT: Actually, about to change sig to smaller, so that's no longer appliccable.

I finally joined for the OCD stuff as well. It's slightly frightening when you finally come around to thinking you're normal, then read four pages of other people's compulsions and realize that you have/do every.single.one.

However, mental problems aside, I love xkcd because it has allowed me to casually bring up D&D in conversations (via linking someone to or mentioning the recursive roleplaying comic, which is funny whether you're a roleplayer or not) and test the waters. Thanks to this, I discovered my boyfriend has always secretly thought D&D was cool! Finally, my dice will move off of the dust-collecting shelf!

Frankly, I'm surprised it's taken me this long to register.

Then doesn't that just make you the most normal person here?

No?

Well welcome anyway.

And yes, D&D references for the +5 win.

Don't just post "Hey, not a bot, cheers."

Since I can't think of anything else to write, I'll ask a quick question: how do you get the "So-and-so-and-so wrote" bit at the top of the message? I thought the quote bit would do it, but all that did was put the word "quote" at the top.

If you aren't just using the "quote" button at the top of their post, you do it by opening the quote bubble with quote="their name", surrounded by brackets, instead of just quote. Close it normally.

*Ahem*

Hi! I'm Bugs, and am reasonably sure that I'm not a bot. I may, however, turn out to be imaginary if my friend's solipsist ramblings turn out to be true. But then at least we'll all be in the same metaphysical boat, with solidarity aplenty. Hurrah.

More specifically, I'm male, British, a little geeky (working on a science PhD) and long to run off and join the circus, where my juggling will amaze the crowds and not require a 50,000 word th*s*s to back it up. I've been lurking here for a couple of weeks and think these fora are great fun.

So, can I play?

Hi all,

I stumbled across this site quite by accident, was duly impressed with the cartoons then found the logic puzzle forum, which has now consumed about three days solid lurking...

a little bio - I'm 26, and a perennial dabbler. Programming, web design, A-life - I've had a go at all of them, though rarely getting past the keen amateur stage. You know what they say - Jack of all Trades, Master of ... something...I kind of tuned out toward the end.

Hey everyone,

After wandering into the forums and finding out about the September meetup, I decided it would be a good idea to join the xkcd community. So, hello!

I'm a 23 year old physics grad student, and a long-time xkcd reader. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the oboe and listening to classical music. But now, I'm off to have fun in the Logic Puzzle thread.
