Ok, flavour spec:

Main characters:
Crew (order from wikipedia) - likely town
1 Captain Mal - captain
2 Zoe - first mate
3 Wash - pilot
4 Inara - escort
5 Jayne - mercenary
6 Kaylee - mechanic
7 Dr Simon - medic
8 River - superhuman
9 Book - priest

Recurring characters (also from wikipedia) - likely independents
1)Badger - smuggling middleman
2)Adelei Niska - crime kingpin
3) Saffron - con artist
4+5) 2 hands of blue - guys who kill anyone who's had contact with River

Reavers - seems to be scum from the flavour

As there are 16 of us, I'd expect all the main characters to be town, with some of recurring characters as independents (number of indies depending on the powers of both town and scum). The reavers don't seem to convert people to be like them from what I can remember, so we're probably looking at mafia rather than cult.

Wash and Zoe are married in the show - so they could be possible masons or lovers. River can read minds, so possible listener? Jayne could be a vig. Simon will most likely be a doctor. I'm not really experienced enough with how flavour is often created to think of possible roles for the other crew. I wouldn't be surprised with a mason group though. The hands of blue guys could be SKs.

That's all for now - I've only seen the show and movie (which were a while ago), and not read the comics, so anything else other people can add would be awesome.

Well obviously the good guys should be the crew. While I guess technically the "bad" running from the Alliance and all, I would guess the Alliance side is bad and the crew of the Firefly to be good.

So we have....
Mal - Serenity's captain, I would guess he is perhaps leader of a mason group or perhaps has an ability to send people out on missions or such.

Zoe - Likely able to talk to Mal, their connection is strong in the show. And probably to her husband Wash as well. I wonder if there is any sort of chosen-death thing, based on the episode where she has to pick between her husband or Mal being released by Niska so I wonder if she can choose (if one or the other is targeted) to switch it.

Wash - As stated Zoe's hubby so I suspect talking ability there. I doubt any sort of lover role, neither would be that stupid to some romeo and juliet thing. I wonder if he has some game-control (piloting!) ability. Ive had roles like that in my games before.

Jayne - I bet he can be bought somehow or converted to join the side of the Alliance. Actually this brings up a point, I doubt Revers are the scum. The revers are kind of independent flavor in the show itself although we learn more in the movie. The entire premise though is Alliance vs the crew of Serenity so I am thinking the Alliance is the scum, perhaps lead by the men with hands of blue who are clearly the lead in finding River.

Inara - They jokingly call her ambassador, I would wonder if she has a role as such. Or perhaps she can visit a person every night to be their companion and find out things about them, like a role cop sort of role. After all her companion training has her able to get in to talk to people easily and she reads people well.

Simon - Doctor, obviously

River - She can kind of read minds, she has triggers, and she seems to be a kind of empath (she cant not feel, and there is the scene wehre she goes around and it's clear she can feel the love and affection between Zoe and Wash and was getting swept up in it). There are all kinds of roles for this. In the rules it said cant read spoilers unless it's in your role and giving River a role where she can read spoilers (or maybe x number a day or something, if she could read them all it would be too game-breaking).

Kaylee - Since she fixes things (the mechanic) maybe she has some way of undoing mistakes of the town, like if a townie is lynched maybe she has the option to undo the lynch or such.

Book - The preacher who-clearly-isnt-just-a-preacher. This shows more in the movie than the series but he knows way too much to have lived in an abby all his life. And the bounty hunter Jubal Early alludes to this when the doc says "why would you beat up a preacher?" and Jubal replies "Him? That ain't no preacher". I wonder if he has some kind of switching role, could flip to alliance side and slip back into his old ways. Or perhaps this aspect of his character is ignored and he can pray for things to happen at night and something of those things is selected to happen.

Two men with hands of blue - Alliance scum. Likely ability to talk to each other probably the leaders of the scum team. They clearly trump any and all other people trying to get river, as anyone who admits meeting her they kill.

Jubal Early - While only shows up once, this character makes sense to be after River particularly, but on the scum team as he works for the Alliance to hunt down people.

There aren't any other major alliance characters so I cant think of anyone else to add to the scum team. But 3 scum in a large game is definitly not balanced so perhaps there are some general alliance scum thrown in the mix. Or, I could see Niska put in with the scum because he seems like the type of person who would work for the alliance for money.

Reavers from the flavour are involved in the game but I would see a reaver role as more of a serial killer. They dont care who they get they are just after flesh so its not a direct antagonist.

Saffron also has companion training and is a con artist and very good at it. If Inara didnt get some kind of sleep-with-you-and-get-your-info role, I would definitely see this type of role given to Saffron. It would almost make more sense to give it to her because she has no alliance of any kind other than herself.

I'm not going to make a big list of guesses yet, but I should say that the Reavers can in canon convert people. A whole episode was devoted to it. I'm not saying that they are a cult, but they might have a limited conversion ability.

Wouldn't be the first time there is a serial killer cult, I could see that for sure.

I thought of someone else for the scum team too - that Alliance mole from the very first episode, Mr. Dobson. Seeing as how he is one who is more undercover I could see him being a godfather sort of role, like if copped he would show town despite being scum. I still cant see how he would be above the men in blue though, because clearly even if he were to find River they would kill him.

Hands of Blue men (I cant help but wonder how many nitrile gloves they went through, cracks me up every time every time I see them...and yet I never look at at those blue nitriles in the lab the same way since seeing Firefly haha) I wonder if later game they have an option to basically just try and kill the shit out of everyone even the alliance.

Is that a standard rule, or is this hinting that we might have a "Mr. Universe" as an independent who can read spoilers?

Could be. I never write much in the way of spoilers anyway, so I guess this doesn't affect me much? Annoying for people who generally write them and read them though.

Also, I didn't think the reavers were converting people in that episode that was mainly about them, but my memory of it is pretty shaky, so defer to other people on that count.

I guess the alliance would make sense as scum as well, but the flavour seems to mainly suggest a reaver invasion of the ship (and while I can see some indies on board, a lot of alliance would be odd) but I guess that depends on how much trust we want to put on the opening flavour.

Meh, probably the latter. Who else can see a lot of fake spoilers being thrown out into the discussion thread to throw "Mr. Universe" off?

I can't fault the rolespec so far - it seems pretty on the money. It wouldn't surprise me to see lots of power roles and lots of kills.
Don't have anything massive to add to it right now.

Want to discuss scum roles a bit further actually, looking at flavour - reavers and the crew are explicitly mentioned. Jayne wouldn't willingly 'turn' against the crew regarding the reavers - he's as scared of them (if not more so) as the rest of the crew.
"Two by two hands of blue" men are a worrying prospect, but I'm not sure on their involvement. Hopefully the flavour when people
die will be useful regarding this.

Random musings...
Anyone finds it weird that we have to make our votes blue? It could be to help the mod, but still.... two by two, hands of blue....
As for rolespec... do we know when this is happening in the Firefly timeline? I mean, I know some characters die eventually (Serenity movie), which, depending on if this is pre/post Serenity, some characters can't be here.
I doubt anyone would help the Reavers on purpose, though they do have a 'culting' mechanism in place (the way I remember it from the show, it was more like 'the survivors turn into Reavers to cope', so more like an accidental culting....).
Inara could have a roleblock when she 'distracts' her... customer? Not sure what the right term is. It could also be a watcher or something... (It kind of reminds me of one of the roles back in TV Tropes where a bard watched someone by jumping on beds together... I could see how it could work with Inara over here)
Book could be a miller because of his connections to the Alliance, or can't be copped correctly since he's so tricky. I like Book as a character. I don't think he would be scum: at least, he should be aligned with the Serenity crew (who should be town), but maybe could be independent? Not sure how it would work.

(Note on flavour knowledge: I've watched all episodes but 2 of the show, and haven't watched the movie. I do know what happens after, but keeping it vague-ish unless we don't mind spoilering people. Considering how old the show is, I don't think people would mind, but I'm erring on the safe side)

Mr Universe is a character in the movie. Basically a really awesome nerdgeekdude who hacks anything and everything and lives in a homemade plannet thing in space that is basically undetectable. I didnt even think of him when I wrote my role ideas....I was thinking more of the series sans movie.

As to timeline, I highly doubt the game follows a particular timeline as that is extremely difficult to pull off if not impossible from a mod's perspective. Keeping in general tune and flow with the series? sure. A set timeline? I highly doubt it.

I think that Chandani is onto something with the accidental conversion thing. If I were going to try to make a Reaver group, I would have any player that targets their victim become a Reaver on the next night, provided that the kill is successful. That is, it wouldn't work on the Doctor, or on someone who got the kill first.

That said, that is a pretty complicated mechanic that probably doesn't exist.

I know I'm a replacement but couldn't the mod just roll a pair of dice on the Reaver victim and if it is double 6's then convert not kill?

OK, role-spec -

Main 9 characters. Simon = Doc. Inara possibly Roleblocker. Jayne possibly Vig. Others I'm less sure of. Masons between Mal/Zoe or Zoe/Wash are possible. River I might expect some posting restrictions, but some powerful abilities. Kaylee, I dont know. Book may be a cop, or some more obscure role. Possible 10th town could be the ship itself (it is mentioned in some of the commentary that everyone considered the ship to be the 10th character of the ensemble.)

Indy's.
(Recurring)Saffron, possible win condition of getting Mal killed. Or maybe Mal alive, rest of crew dead? Not sure. Not sure what powers though, possibly unNKable.
(Recurring)Niska, almost certainly Mal dead, possibly everyone. Very likely SK.
(Single Ep)Jubal Early, Possible SK, with flavour of bringing bounties in.
(Movie)Mr Universe, Maybe has a win condition of revealing everyones role? Almost definetly a cop/ other investigative role.
(Recurring)Badger, Indy survivor most likely, maybe some kind of switching power?

Scum groups.
Alliance, probably got the Operative, and the 'hands of blue'. Maybe Dobson, though he dies in the first ep. Hands of blue might be on their own, as they kill good and bad alike. Standard mafia win condition
Reavers, may have a minor culting, but more likely just 'kill everything'

So many possibilities. I doubt there'd be more than 1 scum group, due to the high number of indy's possible, especially anti-town indy's, so one of the above scum groups is most likely indy, probably Reavers, unless reavers are a single cult? There are also plenty of other one-shot characters who could be in, but those 5 are the most likely, due to fan popularity, to be in the game.

tl, dr; 9 or 10 town. 3 or 4 man scum, rest indy's, mostly anti-town indy's.
